What are CV/ Resume?

A CV or a resume is a document that describes one’s background, professional skills and experiences in career. When you decide to apply for a job, the first thing you need is a CV. CV is a Latin word. It stands for “Curriculum Vitae” means “course of life”. Resume is a record of work experience and skills.



Difference between CV/ Resume

  1. There is no main difference in writing CV or resume. CV is created when you want to apply for America and resume is created when you want to apply for UK, Australia, Asia, and Africa.
  2. Resume is mostly used to show your marketing skills, professional summary and experience where as CV is used to show your professional skills, qualification, experiences, research work, awards and achievements.
  3. Mostly companies ask you to describe your skills and experience on a resume of one page. CV is mostly of 1 or 2 pages. If you have 10 years experience then CV can be of more pages.

 How to write CV/ Resume?

Steps for writing CV or resume are almost same, there is no much difference. CV or resume do not have any fix format, it is a precise document which shows your personal information, professional skills, experience, qualification and achievements.

Steps:

When you apply for job, a CV/ resume is the first thing the recruiter see and make an image of you. Hundred of applicants apply for a job so the chance your CV will be picked and choose is when it format attracts a recruiter and when at first glance the top of first page of CV clearly identify your skills and experience.

Follow the below steps to write a successful CV/ resume:

  1. Research the companies/ organizations/ field

Collect a detail of companies of an area or field in which you want to apply for a job. Make a list of companies in which you are interested. Read about the job description of the companies Collect information on products they work on. What are the requirements of particular job? Your CV should go with the requirements of a specific job of a particular company. Convert your CV according to the job description of that company. The skills that are required in specific job should be place at the top of other skills.

  1. Select a best CV/ resume format

Format for writing a CV/ resume is a critical task. On internet you can find different types of format for writing CV. Choose the one that suit your requirement. For example CV/ resume for fresher, academic, executive, creative, engineer, skill-based, multimedia, environmentalist etc.                                     

  • Choose a writing style and format

Make your CV clear, neat and presentable. Use clear font type such as Times new roman, Ariel or Calibri. Font is as 12 and heading font as 14. Print on an A4 paper. Use bullets to list number of skills, experiences.

  1. Divide the space for each sections

CV/ resume are a short and precise document that shows your skills and experiences, so do not waste space on unnecessary information. Divide your CV by using or drawing lines into short sections to best utilize the space on a page as CV is your short document of 1 to 2 pages.

Mostly CV/ resume consist of following sections:

  1. Contact Information/ Personal Data

At the top of the CV/ resume add name, address, phone number, e-mail. Name can be written at right top of the CV or in center. Address, phone number and email cab be written at the right side of CV. Add these info according to the format of CV/ resume you have chosen. Additional information can be your LinkedIn profile, website address or facebook page.

 

  1. Personal Profile (CV Objective or CV/ Resume Summary)

Personal profile is a short introductory paragraph about you. This part is at top of your CV/ resume which give a short and quick overview about your personal characteristics, skills, experience, interest and achievements to the recruiter. If you are fresh graduate or beginner then this part of CV/ resume can be omitted.

 

Instead of personal profile heading you can write CV Objective or CV/ resume summary.

 

 

  • CV Objective

CV objective set the tone for your entire CV. It is the first section at the start of CV from which recruiter get a idea about your skills, interest and achievements. When a recruiter read your CV objectives, he/ she can get a glimpse and understand whether you are fit for this job or not by comparing your skills and interest with the job requirement.

 

  • CV/ Resume Summary

CV or resume summary is a summary of your professional skills, career experience and certifications. CV or resume summary is written when you have skills and experience in a field of job for which you are applying.

 

  1. Experience

Work experience is one of the important section in your CV/ resume. After seeing your personal detail, a recruiter is interested to see whether your experience is matched with their requirements or not. So your experience should be relevant to the job application. Add job title, company city, dates employed, and responsibilities. Start with the most recent job experience and move backwards. If you do not have any experience then add student duties related to the job requirement or additional skills in you. If you do not have any experience then in a CV starts with your education.

 

  1. Education/ Qualification

In this section list your education detail in chronological order that is start with your recent education. List your university name, your degree, passing year, GPA, yours major and minor. After listing education detail you can add title of your PhD thesis, master’s thesis, undergraduate thesis and list of diplomas and certificates that are relevant to the job.

 

  1. Professional Skills and Achievements

Here list all of your skills and achievements that you have acquired from your previous jobs. Skills are your talents that you have learned in certain domains. Skills are your abilities to perform work in your daily life. Common list of skills are:

  • Project management skills
  • Technical skills
  • Decision making skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Computer skills
  • Communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Speaking a foreign language

 

  1. Interest

List your interests that are relevant to the job. List yours those interests or hobbies that show your skills and diversity. Interest such as a football player shows your leadership or team work related capabilities.

 

  1. Add References or Cover Letter

Include references or add cover letters of the persons such as professors, your previous employees with whom you have worked in the past. Add references or cover letters of those persons who are aware of your personality and can give an undertaking of your skills and experience. Also inform those persons so that they should know when a company contacts them.

 

  1. Add Sections for Additional Information

Additional sections can include any information on which you are proud of, such as:

  • Awards
  • Professional Certification
  • Publications
  • Conferences attended
  • Volunteer work

 

  1. Check your Spelling and Grammar

Thoroughly check your CV for a spelling and grammatical mistakes. Poor spelling and grammatical mistakes CV/ resume have more chance to be rejected at away.

 

  • Update your CV/ Resume

Keep your CV/ resume up to date. Your CV/ resume should reflect the job description and requirements for which you are applying. List at top those skills and experiences which are relevant to a particular job or company.
